Δομικό του συστατικό υπήρξε η άρνηση της αριστοτελικής αντίθεσης μεταξύ επικής και δραματικής ποίησης, η απεύθυνση στη νόηση και όχι στο συναίσθημα, η κυριαρχία της λογικής έναντι της συγκινησιακής ταύτισης του θεατή και η συνακόλουθη κριτική ενεργοποίησή του.
