Οι βοτανικοί κήποι συστάθηκαν τον 16ο αιώνα ως συλλογές φυτικών ειδών χρήσιμων για την εκπαίδευση των ιατρών. Τον 17ο και 18ο αιώνα εμπλουτίστηκαν με σπάνια και εξωτικά είδη φυτών από τις ευρωπαϊκές αποικίες, προάγοντας την έρευνα στη φυσική ιστορία και στηρίζοντας τον επιστημονικό ιμπεριαλισμό των αποικιοκρατικών χωρών.
