  skos:scopeNote "Σειρά αθλητικών διοργανώσεων που ανάγεται στην αρχαία Ελλάδα και αναβίωσε στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα. Σήμερα περιλαμβάνει ένα μεγάλο αριθμό ατομικών και ομαδικών αθλημάτων. Πριν από τη δεκαετία του 1970 οι Αγώνες περιορίζονταν σε αθλητές που είχαν καθεστώς ερασιτέχνη. Τη δεκαετία του 1980 επιτράπηκε η συμμετοχή επαγγελματιών σε πολλά αθλήματα. Σήμερα η συμμετοχή είναι ανοιχτή ακόμα και στους κορυφαίους επαγγελματίες αθλητές. Το 1924 οι Αγώνες επεκτάθηκαν και στα χειμερινά αθλήματα (σε ξεχωριστές διοργανώσεις). Οι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες θεωρούνται ως η κορυφαία αθλητική διοργάνωση παγκοσμίως.
