Οι Μαρωνίτες είναι αραβόφωνοι καθολικοί χριστιανοί που ακολουθούν το συριακό εκκλησιαστικό τυπικό και ανάγουν την Εκκλησία τους στον ασκητή άγιο Μάρωνα, ο οποίος μόνασε στην περιοχή της Συρίας τον 4ο και 5ο αιώνα. Στη διάρκεια των ενδοχριστιανικών διαμαχών της ύστερης αρχαιότητας η χαλκηδονιακή Εκκλησία των μαρωνιτών και οι πιστοί της μετακινήθηκαν προς το όρος του Λιβάνου. Οι Σταυροφορίες έφεραν σε στενή επαφή τους Μαρωνίτες με την καθολική εκκλησία και επέφεραν την ένταξη της μαρωνιτικής Εκκλησίας στους κόλπους της. Η συγκέντρωση των Μαρωνιτών στο όρος του Λιβάνου, η οποία συνεχίστηκε μετά την εκ νέου κατάκτηση της περιοχής από τους μουσουλμάνους, σε συνδυασμό με τη διακριτή θρησκευτική και ομολογιακή τους ταυτότητα, συντέλεσε στη διαμόρωσή τους ως εθνοπολιτισμικής ομάδας που σήμερα θεωρείται ουσιαστικό μέρος της κοινωνίας και του πολιτικού καθεστώτος του Λιβάνου. Πολλοί Μαρωνίτες έχουν μεταναστεύσει σε χώρες της Ευρώπης και της Αμερικής."@el, "Ethnoreligious group of the Near East. Maronites are Arabic-speaking Catholic Christians who follow the Syriac rite and trace the origins of their Church in the ascetic St Maron, who was active in 4th and 5th-century Syria. During the intra-Christian conflicts of late antiquity, the Chalcedonian Church of the Maronites, together with its flock, moved toward the Mount of Lebanon. The Crusades brought the Maronites in close contact with the Catholic Church, and the Maronite Church entered the Catholic fold. The Maronites' concentration in the Mount of Lebanon, together with their distinct religious and confessional identity, contributed to their formation as an ethnoreligious group that is regarded today as a vital part of Lebanese society and politics.
