  skos:scopeNote "Μικρά αργυρά νομίσματα, που ισούνταν με το 1/6 της δραχμής. Κατά τον αττικό σταθμητικό κανόνα ο οβολός υποδιαιρούνταν σε οκτώ χαλκούς, ενώ κατά τον αιγηνιτικό σε δώδεκα. Από τον 2ο αι. π.Χ. και μετά απαντώνται επίσης και χάλκινοι οβολοί. Το νόμισμα πήρε την ονομασία του από τους σιδερένιους οβελούς (σούβλες) που χρησιμοποιούνταν ως μέσο συναλλαγής πριν από την εφεύρεση του νομίσματος. Μια δραχμή αντιστοιχούσε σε 6 οβελούς, δηλαδή τόσους όσους μπορεί να κρατήσει (να «δράξει») το χέρι."@el, "Small silver coins equivalent to 1/6 of the drachm.
