Εισάγονται με τον υποθετικό σύνδεσμο αν, (εάν), ή και με τους χρονικούς συνδέσμους σαν, άμα ή κάποτε και με το σύνδεσμο να. Η υποθετική πρόταση λέγεται και υπόθεση, ενώ η πρόταση που προσδιορίζεται από αυτήν λέγεται απόδοση. Και οι δύο μαζί λέγονται υποθετικός λόγος. Υπάρχουν πέντε είδη υποθετικού λόγου, όπως το πραγματικό (α' είδος), το αντίθετο του πραγματικού (β' είδος), απλή σκέψη του λέγοντος (γ' είδος), το προσδοκώμενο (δ' είδος) και το αορίστως επαναλαμβανόμενο (ε' είδος)."@el, "Conditional sentences are sentences expressing factual implications, or hypothetical situations and their consequences. They are so called because the validity of the main clause of the sentence is conditional on the existence of certain circumstances, which may be expressed in a dependent clause or may be understood from the context.
