Ως επιστήμη, η λεξικογραφία διαιρείται σε δυο κλάδους: τον θεωρητικό και τον πρακτικό. Ο κλάδος της πρακτικής λεξικογραφίας αναφέρεται στην τεχνική για την εγγραφή της έκδοσης λεξικών ενώ ο θεωρητικός κλάδος ασχολείται με την ανάλυση και περιγραφή των σημασιών, τον τρόπο σύνταξής τους και τα παραδείγματα που αναφέρονται για την κατανόηση των όρων.
