BROADER CONCEPT

SCOPE NOTE

  • The view that every event or state of affairs is brought about by antecedent events or states of affairs in accordance with universal causal laws that govern the world. Thus, the state of the world at any instant determines a unique future, whereas for every instant of the past nothing different could have happened from what has already happened. There are many types of determinism, such as technological, psychological, theological and logical, all of which are considered incompatible with or problematic for the notions of free will, human choice and responsibility.
