BROADER CONCEPT

SCOPE NOTE

  • Τravel by groups on pre-scheduled tours organised by tourism companies. Mass tourism originates in the second half of the 19th century in the coastal towns of Britain but became an international phenomenon after World War II. Its rise was due to transport innovations, to the consolidation of a welfare system, to the increase of the middle and working classes' real income, and to the democratisation of leisure time. By extending the principle of industrial capitalism and consumerism to the realm of leisure time, mass tourism has developed to a vast global economy profoundly affecting the societies, the resources and the natural environment of tourist destinations.
