SCOPE NOTE
- When used generally, this is a term which implies heightened subjectivity or emotion. More specifically, it is employed with reference to a self-conscious movement that is traced to the supreme individualism and self-expression of two contemporary 19th-century artists – van Gogh and Gauguin.
