PREFERRED TERM

221Neoclassicism

SCOPE NOTE

  • A reaction to Rococo, Neoclassicism was born of the Enlightenment idea that human affairs should be ruled by reason and the common good rather than by tradition. From the mid-18th century, infatuation with the antique encouraged the development of a neoclassical movement in art throughout Europe.
