SCOPE NOTE
- An institution that appears in ancient Athens. It involved the "basic military training" of Athenian adolescents from their 18th to their 20th year. The training lasted two years, the first year it took place in the area of Piraeus, and in the second year, after the state provided the adolescents with arms and armour, they were sent to protect the borders of Attica.
