BROADER CONCEPT

SCOPE NOTE

  • A high official who rules a country, province or colonial possession as the representative of his sovereign or king and who is empowered to act in the sovereign’s name. The office designates persons appointed by the sovereign and is not necessarily linked with nobility. Viceroy (virrey) was the title given to the principal governors of Spain’s American colonies, as well as to the governors of the “kingdoms” (reinos) of peninsular Spain proper (e.g., Aragon, Valencia). In the course of time, the office of viceroy was mostly connected with Spanish, British, and Portuguese colonialism.
