SCOPE NOTE

  • Outbreaks of cholera, an infectious disease whose bacterium is spread through water and food. Cholera infects the small intestine, provokes acute diarrhea and may lead to dehydration and death. Cholera epidemics were particularly hard in the 19th century; they have often developed into pandemics that hit the poorest regions of the planet.
