BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- The branch of geophysics that examines the behaviour and products of elastic (seismic) waves travelling within the earth, which are produced by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, explosions (including nuclear explosions) and meteorite impacts. Seismology began to flourish as a separate field of inquiry in the second half of the 19th century in conjuction with earthquake studies and the development of precise seismographs. The discipline covers documentation of events and effects (observations, maps, catalogs), instrumentation and analysis, theory and application, and it has been based on the international cooperation and standardization, already from the early 20th century.
