BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Il Dottore is a typical example of the elderly types of Commedia dell’ arte. Well-read and pedantic, he is primarily a verbal type, since what makes him stand out is the distinctive way he speaks. He used mainly a corrupted and exaggerated speech. Corruption is based on the alliteration, distortion of one word or its transformation into another with a similar sound, resulting in comic effects that make the speech either irrational or difficult to understand. Exaggerated speech based on obviousness has the same effect. His long-winded disquisitions, scholarly puns, and malapropisms were spoken in a jargon of Latin jumbled with local dialect.
