SCOPE NOTE
- An office that appears in ancient Athens. The Athenian Demos awarded the office of proxenos to foreign citizens who served the interest of Athenians in their city, either in private affairs (usually commercial) or in public, inter-state matters (e.g. embassies). Proxenoi ensured that hospitality was extended to Athenians in their city, presented them to the competent officials and represented them where this was deemed necessary.
