SCOPE NOTE

  • Organised communities of persons who live in a specific place in partial or complete seclusion from society and pursue a religious and/or mystic lifestyle devoted to contemplative activities of prayer, study, self-searching, and manual labour. Monasteries are organised as institutions that dispose of -and manage- their own property (including buildings and dwellings for the performance of rituals and for the accommodation of their members), have a certain degree of administrative autonomy and are governed according to particular hierarchies and sets of rules.
