SCOPE NOTE
- An office that first appears in ancient Athens. One of the nine archons, he presided over the Areopagus and he was the supervisor of religious festivals like the Lenaea and the Mysteries. His jurisdiction included cases of claimants for priesthood, of impiety and of homicide.
