SCOPE NOTE
- Organisations of craftsmen and professionals in the urban space whose function was to determine product prices, supervise the right to exercise the profession, obtain raw materials, regulate pay, tax status and generally maintain control over production. The guilds were, in various forms, a widespread phenomenon in pre-modern societies.
