BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Willful damage or destruction of public or private property by means of fire or explosion. Reckless activity—or burning without regard to consequences—can result in an arson conviction. Large scale destructions by fire have been attributed to deliberate arsons, although their causes are often natural phenomena or accidents. An arsonist may act from a variety of different motives, including sabotage, rage, profit, and the desire to conceal or destroy evidence. Persons suffering from pyromania have a pathological urge to set fires.
