PREFERRED TERM

1708Abbot

SCOPE NOTE

  • The head of a monastic community. The office of the abbot originates in the emergence of Christian monasticism in late antiquity Egypt. In the course of time, the authority of the abbots over the monks was formalized with the development of canonical law and of the provisions concerning the administration of the monasteries. At the same time, the abbots became members of the clergy, as they were ordained into priesthood. The relationship of the abbots with ecclesiastical administration varies according to whether the monastery lies within the jurisdiction of the local bishop or is subordinated directly to a higher ecclesiastical authority (stauropegic monastery).
