BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
-
Ordained member of Christian Churches, who performs liturgical and pastoral duties in the framework of a small community of believers. With the expansion of the Christian church in late antiquity, priests undertook many of the bishops' functions, such as the administration of the sacraments and mass celebration, and were acknowledged as heads of local parishes. This common tradition has marked the development of the office in all Christian denominations despite their differences, as for instance in the issue of the celibacy of the clergy.
