BROADER CONCEPT

SCOPE NOTE

  • The notional line that is vertical to the design of the coin. The term expresses the directional relationship between the obverse and reverse type of a numismatic object and it is usually marked using the hours of the clock. This relationship can be perceived when a coin is held by its edges between forefinger and thumb with its obverse type upright, and then rotated on this axis. During ancient times the two dies used to strike coins were not always aligned in a fixed position.
