BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Vessels that were in use in the Mediterranean during the early modern period. They were narrow, long and fast, with a length/width ratio of 7:1, and 18 to 22 rows for oarsmen. They were powered mainly by oars and only incidentally by sails. Fustas were often used in piracy.
