453Theatre of the Absurd
BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Form of theatre that appeared after the second world war and tried to express the sense of meaningless human existence and the inadequacy of rational approach. Abandoning inductive reasoning, it employed the free subconscious composition of elements and symbols. Its dramaturgy comprises plays without plot and concrete dramatis personae. Questioning the essential human ability to communicate, it led to a stripping down of language and a lessening of its value. With the intrusion of the bizarre in the stage reality and the disintegration of the human personality, it achieved the juxtaposition of the tragic and the comic and glorified the fictional.
