BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Theatrical type (stock figure) of the Commedia dell’ arte that took on several different names, derived from Plautus’s Miles gloriosus and having vanity as the common theme. Capitano is the vainglorious, deceitful braggart soldier. He is exaggerated and flashy, but in essence cowardly and stupid. His part usually involves his boasting of great exploits of war and amatory successes, but he is also the subject of pranks and jokes by the other characters. His costume has undergone many changes but has always alluded to military attire, with a feathered cap and a large sword.
