BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Iron rods, measuring 1 to 1.5 meters in length, used as a medium of exchange in the premonetary Greek world. Their thickness was such that six rods could be held together in the palm of the hand. From the Greek verb drattomai, which means grasp in the fist, comes the word drachm, which was equivalent to six obols.
