BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Instruments that collect electromagnetic radiation from distant objects, using mostly lenses, mirrors, or both, in order to produce an image of these objects or enable the radiation to be analysed. The first telescopes used for systematic observations of the sky in the early 17th century were constructed with lenses and played a significant role in the establishment of the heliocentric system and the new astronomical theories of the Scientific Revolution.
