BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- An institution that appears in ancient Athens and is related to the offer of hospitality and of private and public services to Athenian citizens in other cities of Greece by their citizens. The institution existed since the Archaic period and was of a private nature, as it conserned the relationship between kings and nobles. With the establishment of democracy, the proxenia came under the jurisdiction of the Athenian Demos.
