BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Outbreaks of cholera, an infectious disease whose bacterium is spread through water and food. Cholera infects the small intestine, provokes acute diarrhea and may lead to dehydration and death. Cholera is connected with bad sanitation, lack of clean drinking water, and poverty. Cholera epidemics were particularly hard in the 19th century; they have often developed into pandemics that hit the poorest regions of the planet.
