BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- The title of imam refers to persons who perform functions of religious leadership and guidance in the framework of Muslim communities. The office of imam refers to the religious person who leads worship services (e.g. prayer) and provides guidance to the believers in their religious duties. The title, however, is also bestowed on persons of legal and theological authority, like the founders of the legal schools of Islam and the experts and intepreters of the holy tradition (hadith). In a broader sense, the office of the imam refers to the political and religious leader of the Muslim community. In the Shiite tradition, imams are the successors of the caliph Ali, son-in-law of Muhammad. Their number, however, as well as the line of succession, differ according to the different branches of Shiism.
