SCOPE NOTE
- Head of the Catholic Church, bishop of Rome and holder of one among the most ancient sees of Christianity. The pope is regarded by Catholic Christians as the apostolic sucessor of Peter and, therefore, as the head of all Christians. The dogma of papal infallibility is based on apostolic succession. According to it, the pope is beyond the possibility of error when speaking ex cathedra or when issuing a decision or a clarification on religious and moral issues. Apart from being a religious leader, the pope is the head of the Vatican state in Rome, while during the middle ages and until the unification of the Italian nation state he had under his rule the so-called "papal states".
