BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- A term that first appears in ancient Athens during the times of Athenian politician Cleisthenes. Prytanies are internal groups consisting of fifty members, a number resulting from the allocation of five hundred members of the Council in ten sections according to their tribe. The term of each prytany lasted for one-tenth of the year. These groups were responsible for preparing the cases for discussion in the Council.
