SCOPE NOTE
- Believers who live in seclusion from secular social life and are formally included in an established community that practices an ascetic way of life and is organized under specific rules of personal and collective behaviour. Monasticism, which originates in late antiquity Egypt, developed in diverse forms in the history of Christianity. Monks, whether organised in autonomous communities, or belonging to broader groups or even monastic orders, constitute an essential part of -mainly- the Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
