BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- Science which studies minerals, that is naturally occuring solids of usually inorganic substance, with a definite chemical composition and crystalline structure. It includes fields such as crystallography, crystalline chemistry and physical properties of minerals. From the 16th to the early 19th century, mineralogy was indivisible from petrology, and bridged chemistry and natural history. During the 19th century, it lost this commanding position with respect to the study of earth, and became a subdiscipline of geology, whereas in the second half of the 19th century it was seperated from petrology.
