BROADER CONCEPT

SCOPE NOTE

  • The theory and practice that emerged in the late 19th century aiming at improving human heredity, typically through control of reproduction. A central distinction was made between "positive" and "negative" eugenics. "Positive" eugenics encouraged breeding by those considered to possess "superior" hereditary qualities. "Negative" eugenics, which flourished in the first half of the 20th century also as policies, deterred or prevented, through segregation or sterilisation, breeding by those considered to be physically, mentally, or morally "defective". Eugenics began to decline after World War I and the emergence of genetics.
