SCOPE NOTE
- Type of novel which emerged in the 16th century in Spain. The main character of the picaresque novel is the "picaro" (the Spanish word for "rogue"), and a typical story concerns the escapades of an insouciant rascal who lives by his wits and shows little if any alteration of character through a long succession of adventures.
