SCOPE NOTE
- From c. 1880 to c. 1900, following and in contrast to Realism and Impressionism, Symbolism was a movement in literature as well as the visual arts. In ways an expression of Romanticism, Symbolism was also subjective and emotional rather than objective and detached.
