BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- The idea which describes the relationship between technology and society in two related ways. The first is a theory of technology, arguing that the development of technology proceeds in an autonomous manner, and the design of technological artefacts and systems is determined by an internal, technical logic independent of social influence. This view has been criticised by the theory of social construction of technology. The second is a theory of society, arguing that technology is the cause or determinant of societal change and that, after all, technological change equals social progress.
