BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- The discipline that studies technology in modernity and includes the history of invention, the history of engineering, and the social history of technology. More specifically it focuses on topics such as the relationship between technology and science, technological change and innovation, industrialisation and technological systems, natural and built environment, gender and race issues with respect to technology. From the establishment of the discipline, around the middle of the 20th century, until the 1980s, histories of technology were generally written as narratives with little formal analysis with most of them reproducing technological determinism. From the 1980s onwards, technological determinism was rejected as the field was enriched by the introduction of constructivist approaches, which argued that the design of technologies was the outcome of negotiations between several social groups (such as inventors, engineers, managers, salespersons, and users), rather than the product of internal, technical logic.
