BROADER CONCEPT

SCOPE NOTE

  • An honor awarded to Athenian citizens and foreigners in ancient Athens. The pedestal of the statue was inscribed with a brief statement of the reasons for the award of the honor, such as the achievement of an important feat, or the benefactions on behalf of the city, or even the fine execution of the duties assigned to the honorand. During the Hellenistic period, the erection of a statue became commonplace, particularly when honors were being awarded to rulers.
