SCOPE NOTE
- The research field that emerged in the early 1970s, investigating from a sociological standpoint the very content of scientific knowledge (scientific ideas, methods, procedures and practices), which had been excluded both from the sociology of knowledge that had argued that sciences and mathematics were insulated from social forces, and the traditional sociology of science that had focused on the institutional features, norms and values of the scientific community. Examining the epistemological status of scientific knowledge, sociology of scientific knowledge argues that the outcomes of scientific research are not determined (or fully determined) by the theoretical and experimental prosedures, but they are decisively affected by their social setting, shaping importantly the research field of science and technology studies.
