SCOPE NOTE

  • Practice or science of preventing, diagnosing, and curing disease, and of restoring and maintaining health. Medicine as a way of explaining and coping with disease was developed by all cultures. However, the naturalistic cause of disease was posited in antiquity by the followers of Hippocratic theory and passed into the practice of Western medicine, which has presented itself as "scientific", although what that constitutes has changed frequently. Modern medicine, as a scientific profession, includes numerous disciplines and specialities dealing with health and disease and it is practised in various facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, universities, private offices etc. Also, it is closely related to politics and public policies (public health), and ethics (bioethics).
