BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- A process that took place in ancient Athens from 403 BC onwards in the first Assembly of each year. Any citizen could propose a law in writing to the secretary of the Council to replace an earlier law. The process of legislation took the form of a trial. The man proposing the new law appeared as the prosecutor, while the defence of the earlier law was assumed by Athenians called syndikoi (advocates). The nomothetai decided by a show of hands either in favour or against the proposed law.
