PREFERRED TERM

2350Natural theology

SCOPE NOTE

  • The attempt to establish fundamental religious truths, especially with respect to the existence and attributes of christian God, by means of reason applied to nature, without invoking or appealing to revealed truths. Natural theology was systematised in the late 18th and the early 19th centuries by the teleological argument from design, which identified that nature functions so perfectly, that it could not have come about by chance, but must have been designed by an intelligent Creator. In this way, natural theology argued that the divine wisdom can be discerned in nature.
