BROADER CONCEPT
SCOPE NOTE
- A procedure that appears in ancient Athens during the process of assigning and assuming the liturgies of the wealthiest citizens. One citizen had the right to refuse to assume the liturgy and to challenge another to either undertake it on the grounds that he considered him better qualified to bear the expense or to exchange their properties by means of the antidosis. If the person challenged refused, the case was brought to court.
