BROADER CONCEPT

SCOPE NOTE

  • Interactions and combinations between elements of two distinct historical and cultural traditions. Syncretism has been viewed as referring mostly to interactions in the sphere of religion, but it can also be identified in other spheres of cultural and social life. Syncretism is different from the formation of new cultural forms from bits and pieces of cultural practice of diverse origins, in that syncretism does not represent a cultural mosaic, but a reintegration of elements into a new whole.
