PREFERRED TERM

1857Victoriati

SCOPE NOTE

  • Roman silver coins which derived their name from the depiction of Victory placing a wreath upon a trophy on their reverse. They circulated in S. Italy and Gaul from about 221 to 170 BCE. The victoriati weighed three-quarters of a denarius but they were a debased coinage throughout their production as they averaged about 80% silver and 20% copper unlike the denarii which were from pure silver.
