ENTRY TERMS
- Fires
SCOPE NOTE
- Large-scale uncontrolled fires in a built area or in the countryside with disastrous consequences for the natural and/or the human-made environment. Although conflagrations are sometimes due to intentional action (arson), they mostly are provoked either by natural phenomena (e.g. drought, flashes of lightning) or by a combination of natural phenomena and human activity (e.g. ways of construction and of resource exploitation, management of combustible materials).
